Improvement works to Memorial Gardens and grounds at Langstone Vale Crematorium

The Memorial Gardens and grounds at Langstone Vale Crematorium are undergoing a  programme of works during 2025 that will improve the quality and experience of those visiting their loved one’s memorials and the site in general.

Work has already started on some of the bigger maintenance projects. Throughout January and February, we cut all the hedging and carried out tree works before the start of nesting season.

Old drainage ditches have also been cleared and dug out to improve the flow of water and create a network of streams around the site. This has dramatically improved drainage on the site, making visiting memorials easier in wet weather.   Wildflower seed has been sowed on to the spoil that has come out of the ditches to create ‘corridors’ for wildlife that link different areas of the grounds.

Along with our groundsman, Eddie Ford, we are developing a more nuanced approach to grass cutting. This will produce a patchwork of formal lawns, paths, grassy sections and wildlife areas.

Research shows the benefits that open green spaces can have for both physical and mental health and with that in mind we are also planning to create a ‘nature walk’ around the gardens where visitors will be able to find areas for respite and contemplation among nature.

The work that has been completed so far is already being enjoyed by the surrounding wildlife, including deer, ducks, moorhens, green wood peckers and goldcrest among the regular visitors.

Throughout the project, improvements will also be carried out to specified living memorials. This may include repairs to granite circles, adding fresh chippings to memorials or upgrading tree plots with the use of larger garden rings at no charge. Please contact the crematorium if you have any concerns about your existing memorial and would be interested in discussing the upgrade work with us.

Langstone Vale Crematorium is keen to be a part of its local community and as such, has been working in partnership with Wellies Farm who have kindly donated a new archway for the entrance of the Memorial Gardens. Wellies Farm provides a safe environment where people with learning difficulties and mental health problems can enjoy the countryside and learn life skills as well as carry out projects within the local community. Many of the learners from the farm have a personal connection with Langstone Vale Crematorium and so take pride in planting up the pots and planters that you’ll see around the site.

If you are a member of a community group and feel that your group could make use of our grounds or chapel for the benefit of the bereaved and their loved ones resting with us, then please contact the crematorium to discuss ways that we can work together.

Thank you for your co-operation whilst the improvement works are ongoing.
